What is geofencing and does my gaming product need it?
Short answer: Geofencing blocks play from jurisdictions where your model is prohibited or unsettled. If your legal analysis excludes any state, you need enforceable geolocation controls — terms-of-service language alone is not a defense.
Geofencing combines IP-based blocking, device geolocation, payment-address checks, and account-level state attestation. The strength required scales with risk: a promotional sweepstakes may be fine with IP plus billing address, while a real-money product typically needs certified geolocation with spoof and VPN detection.
Regulators evaluate whether controls actually work, not whether they exist on paper. Common failure modes are stale IP databases, no VPN detection, no re-check during a session, and no reconciliation between the registered state and where play actually occurs.
Document the control stack, log the blocks, and audit the logs. That record is often what turns an inquiry into a closed file.
