What should a college athlete look for in an NIL attorney?
Short answer: Look for relevant contract experience, a clear explanation of who the lawyer represents, and a plan for current school and NIL-rule coordination.
Ask how the lawyer reviews compensation, usage rights, exclusivity and termination in an NIL agreement. Clarify whether the athlete, an entity or someone else is the client, who pays the fee, whether other relationships present conflicts and who will actually do the work.
Ask how current division, school and other applicable requirements will be checked with school compliance. Have the lawyer explain the proposed scope and fees before engagement. No attorney can guarantee eligibility or clearance for a deal.
